Angletarn Pikes South Top

The walk up to Angletarn Pikes South Top from the Penrith side is straightforward enough, and the fell itself sits in that sweet spot where you get proper views without needing a full day's commitment. The summit sits at around 1,900 feet - high enough to feel like you've achieved something, low enough that fit walkers will handle it in a couple of hours including the scramble to the top.

What you're after here is the panorama across the Lake District fells. On a clear day, Helvellyn dominates the view to the west, and the eastern ridges drop away to reveal the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people move to Cumbria and never leave. The tarn itself - properly turquoise on the right light - sits below and gives the walk its name.

This is walker territory, no question. Families with older kids who don't mind steep terrain will get something out of it, but younger ones might find the climb tedious. If you're based at Crossgate Luxury Glamping or Sykeside, this makes a cracking afternoon outing. Ullswater Holiday Park is further out but still within striking distance if you've got transport.

Start early to beat the weather - Cumbrian clouds roll in fast. The fell's free to access, takes roughly two to three hours round trip depending on your pace, and you won't need any special kit beyond decent boots. Worth doing if you're in the area, though it's not the sort of peak that'll dominate your holiday plans.
