Anglo Saxon Kilns

Four ancient kilns huddle together in a Norfolk field, their red-brick walls still standing after more than a thousand years. These Anglo Saxon pottery kilns tell the story of early medieval craft workers who shaped clay into everyday vessels here between the 7th and 9th centuries. You'll find them just east of what's marked as Glamping on maps - probably referring to the North Norfolk Coast area where several holiday parks cluster.

The site itself is fairly modest. Don't expect grand ruins or interpretive boards. What you get are the actual kiln chambers, their firing holes still visible, surrounded by scattered pottery fragments that occasionally surface after rain. History enthusiasts will appreciate seeing genuine Anglo Saxon industrial archaeology in situ.

Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are properly into ancient history. It's really one for those who get a kick from standing where medieval potters once worked their trade. Allow about 20 minutes unless you're the type to pore over every brick.

The kilns work well as a quick detour if you're staying at nearby Heacham Beach or Manor Park holiday parks. Both Parkdean resorts are within easy driving distance, as is Searles Leisure Resort. It's the sort of low-key historical site that adds depth to a Norfolk coast holiday without demanding a whole afternoon.
