Horseshie Plantation

The woodland at Horseshie Plantation spreads across Norfolk's quieter eastern reaches, a proper working forest rather than a manicured country estate. Tall pines dominate - you're walking under dense canopy that blocks out most of the sky, especially on overcast days. It's the sort of place where you might spot muntjac deer if you're lucky, though honestly most visitors just appreciate the flat, easy paths without worrying too much about wildlife spotting.

This works well for families after a gentle woodland wander that won't knacker the younger ones out. A couple of hours here is about right before everyone needs a break. The lack of visitor facilities or signage means it feels genuinely remote despite being near Glamping and the cluster of holiday parks scattered across the area - Wild Luxury and Deepdale Camping are both within striking distance if you're planning a longer Norfolk break.

Bring proper footwear though. Norfolk forests can turn boggy fast, especially in winter or after rain. Summer's the most straightforward season to visit. There's nothing particularly dramatic about Horseshie - no grand vistas or Instagram moments - but that's partly the appeal. It's the sort of place you pop into between exploring the coast or visiting one of the nearby parks, rather than a destination in itself. Free access and no crowds makes it feel like a proper local secret, the kind of spot Norfolk residents know about and tourists mostly miss.
