Annagh Hill

Standing 445 metres above sea level, this modest peak offers surprisingly rewarding views across County Down without demanding the endurance needed for the higher Mourne summits. The walk up takes about an hour from the forest car park near Castlewellan, following well-marked paths through mixed woodland before emerging onto open moorland.

Families with older children will find it manageable - there's nothing technically challenging about the route, though it's a proper walk rather than a gentle stroll. The panoramic views from the top stretch across Strangford Lough to the east and towards the Mourne Mountains to the south, making it well worth the effort on a clear day.

Dog walkers love this spot, and you'll often have the summit to yourself mid-week. The path can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the views.

It's particularly good for testing your legs before tackling the more demanding peaks in Tollymore Forest Park, just a few miles south. The hill gives you that proper sense of achievement without the crowds you'll encounter on Slieve Donard or the other popular Mourne peaks.
