Annan Old Parish Church

The kirk sits quietly on the edge of Annan, a substantial stone building that's been watching over this corner of Dumfries and Galloway since the 1700s. Inside, it's all high ceilings and wooden pews - the sort of place where you can almost hear centuries of Sunday services echoing off the walls. The churchyard sprawls around it, with old gravestones tilting at angles that only time can manage.

This isn't a showstopper attraction, to be honest. You're looking at maybe thirty minutes if you take it slowly, poking about the graveyard and reading the inscriptions. History buffs might linger longer, tracing the names and dates back generations. Families with restless kids will find it peaceful but brief - there's not much to occupy them beyond the old stones themselves.

The real value comes if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Queensberry Bay or Hoddom Castle are both within easy reach - and want to stretch your legs into town. Annan itself is small and unassuming, about four miles from Lockerbie, and the church gives you a genuine sense of what matters in a place this size. Worth a wander if you're in the area, particularly on a fine afternoon when the light catches the stone properly. Just don't plan your day around it.
