Arnford Wood

The woodland around Arnford, just outside Clitheroe, is proper walking country. Dense mixed forest with a network of paths that wind through beech and oak - the kind of place where you lose track of time and come out wondering where the afternoon went. It's not a manicured attraction with visitor centres or cafes; this is just good solid forest, the real Lancashire stuff.

Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here. The paths are well-trodden and reasonably maintained, taking you through some lovely dappled light in summer and opening up proper views across the Ribble Valley when the leaves drop. You're looking at anything from a quick 45-minute loop to a full two-hour expedition depending on which trails you fancy. Bring proper boots though - it gets boggy in places, particularly after rain.

It works brilliantly as part of a wider park holiday. Calder Farm is only five miles away and their camping pods and caravan pitches make it an ideal base for exploring this corner of Lancashire. You could easily string together a few walks across different woodland patches in the area, break it up with a pub lunch in Clitheroe itself, and still have time to potter about without feeling rushed.

Worth visiting? If you're staying nearby, absolutely. It's genuine forest walking without the crowds you'd get at somewhere more famous. Not a destination on its own, but a proper addition to a few days in the Ribble Valley.
