Cricket at Arundel Castle Ground is a proper Sussex experience. You're watching the game on what has to be one of England's most unusual backdrops - the castle looms above the ground, medieval and imposing, which rather puts modern cricket into perspective. The ground itself sits in the shadow of that fortress, and frankly, it's the setting that makes it special rather than the cricket alone.

This is a county ground, so you get Sussex Cricket Club matches throughout the season. If you're not desperate to catch a specific fixture, a quiet day with a smaller crowd can actually be better - you can actually move around, grab a seat without drama, and soak in the atmosphere without getting jostled. The views from certain spots are excellent, particularly when the light's right on the castle walls.

Walkers and history buffs get the most out of a visit here because you're combining two things at once. You can easily wander into Arundel town centre afterwards, check out the castle proper if you fancy it, then loop back. The setting appeals to families too, though young children might find a full day of cricket tedious - a few hours is enough.

With South Downs Caravan Park just under a mile away, it's wonderfully accessible for a park-based holiday. You're in proper walking territory here, with the South Downs National Park on your doorstep. The ground itself doesn't charge to wander round on non-match days, though obviously you'll need a ticket if there's a game on.
