About Ashdown Hill
The summit sits at 249 metres and the ascent from Maidstone direction is gentle enough for families with reasonably confident walkers. Allow 90 minutes for a round trip from the car park, longer if you fancy exploring the surrounding footpaths. The top itself is fairly open moorland with a trig point and a few benches where people stop to catch their breath and take photos. Kids tend to enjoy it - there's space to run about, and the views give you something to point at.
Timing matters. Weekday mornings are quieter than weekends, and weather makes all the difference. I went on a grey afternoon and honestly, it was a bit underwhelming. Come back on a proper sunny day and it transforms.
If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Chegworth Mill is excellent - Ashdown Hill makes a solid half-day outing alongside exploring Maidstone itself. Bearsted and Painters Farm are also close enough for an easy drive. It's not a destination in its own right, but as part of a broader walk around the North Downs, it fits nicely. Free to access, naturally.
