Ulcombe Hill

The walk up Ulcombe Hill rewards you with proper views across the Weald - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see why people bothered to settle here centuries ago. It's a modest peak by any standard, the kind of place where "summit" might be overselling it, but that's rather the point. You get the satisfaction of reaching the top without needing mountaineering skills or a full day's schedule.

The hill itself sits between Maidstone and the deeper Kent countryside, making it a solid half-hour detour if you're in the area. The walk is straightforward, manageable for families with primary-school-aged kids, though younger ones might flag a bit on the slope back down. There's nothing to do at the top except stand there and look, which is either brilliant or pointless depending on your mood. I'd say it's brilliant on a dry afternoon when you can actually see something.

Walkers heading out from Maidstone will find this useful for breaking up a longer route through the Weald. The surrounding area has decent paths, and if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Chegworth Mill is closest at a mile and a half away - it's worth the leg stretch. Spring's probably best, when the view isn't obscured by summer haze and you're not battling through overgrown vegetation. Free to visit, naturally. Allow an hour if you're taking photos and actually enjoying the vista rather than just ticking it off.
