Ashen Plantation

Walking into Ashen Plantation feels like stepping into someone's Victorian daydream. This Sussex forest, near Hassocks, is the sort of place where the trees seem to have been arranged rather than simply left to grow - which isn't entirely fanciful, given its planted heritage.

It's woodland proper: tall conifers mixed with broadleaves, tracks that meander rather than rush you anywhere, and that particular quality of light that filters through dense canopy on even the dullest afternoons. You're looking at a couple of hours here if you're meandering, less if you stick to the main paths. Dogs love it. Families with children who can manage uneven ground will get something from it, though there's no obvious playground or visitor infrastructure to speak of.

Historically minded types might find the planted origins interesting - this isn't ancient woodland, but it's old enough now to feel established. The forest works well as a half-day addition to a park-based holiday rather than a destination in itself. Downsview Park sits just a couple of miles away, making it convenient for a morning or afternoon walk without needing to drive far.

It's free to access and there are no set opening hours (typical for an open forest), which means you can hit it early or late to dodge crowds. Bit muddy in winter though, so pack accordingly. The real appeal here is simplicity - just trees, air, and some decent walking without the visitor centre faff.
