Jack And Jill Windmills

Two windmills standing side by side on the South Downs near Hassocks - that's Jack and Jill, and they're proper landmarks once you spot them. Built in the 1820s, they sit on high ground with views across the Weald that make the walk up worthwhile on a clear day. One's a tower mill, the other a post mill, so if you're into industrial heritage you'll find plenty to examine - the mechanics are still visible enough to understand how they worked.

The walk to them from Hassocks takes about 45 minutes across pleasant downland paths. It's not strenuous but there's a noticeable climb at the end, so factor that in if you're with younger children. The mills themselves aren't open to go inside - you're viewing them from outside - but the setting is lovely and they photograph well from several angles.

Walkers doing the Sussex Weald trails or Downland Way will want to include these. History enthusiasts get something tangible from seeing how grain was milled here nearly 200 years ago. Families with capable kids find it a decent half-day outing, though you won't spend more than an hour at the mills themselves.

If you're based at Southdown Way Caravan & Camping Park just a mile away, this is an easy day trip. Blackberry Wood and Downsview Park are similarly close. Free to visit, obviously - it's open land. Best on a morning when the light's good and the path's dry.
