Ashwell Springs

The chalk springs that feed Ashwell create one of those rare Cambridgeshire landscapes where water actually matters. It's a proper wetland reserve - reedy, boggy, alive with bird calls - which makes a refreshing change from the flat arable fields that dominate this corner of East Anglia.

You're looking at a small reserve near Baldock, maybe forty minutes north of Cambridge. The draw is straightforward: two spring-fed ponds and the chalk stream that runs off them, lined with reeds and willows. Birdwatchers come for the warblers and winter wildfowl. It's not dramatic or vast, but it's genuine habitat rather than manicured parkland.

The walk takes about an hour if you're patient with binoculars, half that if you're just passing through. Spring and early summer are best - you'll hear more than you see, honestly. Autumn brings migrants. Winter's fine if you don't mind the damp squelch underfoot.

If you're based at Ashridge Farm Caravan Club just down the road, this is an easy stroll before breakfast or after tea. It won't fill a day on its own, but it slots well into a broader Hertfordshire walk. Radwell Lake is nearby too if you want to combine a couple of water-based spots. There's no visitor centre, no facilities - just a reserve with access and a footpath. Free to wander, as far as I can tell. Bring binoculars and patience, not expectations of Attenborough-level drama.
