Baldock

Medieval streets still follow their original paths here, though most visitors rush through on their way to Cambridge. That's their loss. Baldock proper sits at the heart of north Hertfordshire's chalk downland, where Roman roads once crossed and medieval merchants built their fortunes on wool. The town centre retains that compact feel - you can walk from one end to the other in ten minutes, past timber-framed buildings that have been watching the world change for centuries.

Ashwell, just a few miles northeast, deserves the longer visit. St. Mary's Church stands as one of Hertfordshire's finest, while Ashwell Village Museum tells the story of this spring-fed settlement with genuine passion. The Ashwell Springs themselves bubble up from the chalk, creating the headwaters of the River Cam - not many places can claim to be the source of Cambridge's famous waterway.

Chalk hills roll in every direction, offering proper walking country. Deadman's Hill and Gallows Hill might sound ominous, but both provide cracking views across the vale. Highley Hill gives you the best panorama of all on a clear day. Down in the valleys, spots like Newnham Farm Patch show how traditional farming and wildlife can coexist.

Getting here couldn't be simpler - Baldock sits right on the A1(M), making it a doddle by car. Trains run from London King's Cross to nearby stations, though you'll need a bit of planning for connections.

Staying at one of the local parks makes perfect sense. You're within striking distance of Cambridge, St Albans, and the Chilterns, yet far enough from London's sprawl to actually hear birdsong. The countryside here remains wonderfully unspoilt, despite being so accessible.
