Ashworth Waterfall

The River Irwell cuts through a proper gorge near Bury, and Ashworth Waterfall is where it gets theatrical. Water tumbles down a decent drop into a rocky pool below, and it's the kind of spot that makes you forget you're in Lancashire - feels more like you've wandered into the Pennines proper.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a five-minute car-park stroll; you need to put the boots on and head out from the nearby countryside. The gorge itself is worth the effort though, especially after rain when the waterfall's got real power to it. Kids often enjoy the scramble down and the chance to paddle in the pool if they're that way inclined, though the rocks can be slippy.

Allow a couple of hours if you're making a proper outing of it rather than just popping by. Spring's best when water levels are higher, though summer works fine if you don't mind sharing the space with other hikers. The nearest town is Bury, which is handy for provisions if you need them.

Pair it with Burrs Country Park just 3.5 miles away if you're camping - the caravan site there is well-regarded and makes a solid base. Dearden Wood's another option at 4.8 miles, though Burrs has better facilities. The waterfall works as a morning or afternoon walk while you're based at either site. Real value if you're into riverside walking, less essential if you're after manicured attractions.
