Astaria sits just outside Maldon, a sprawling leisure complex that's part theme park, part adventure playground, part quirky Essex institution. It's the sort of place that promises everything from go-karts to water slides to soft play, though the reality is a bit more ramshackle than the website suggests - think well-meaning rather than polished.

You're really here for the kids, to be honest. There's a decent go-kart track if they're old enough to grip a steering wheel, some water attractions for warmer months, and enough diversions to keep under-tens occupied for an afternoon. The grounds sprawl across quite a lot of land, which means you can wander between activities without feeling hemmed in.

It's free to wander round, though individual attractions will cost you - the pricing structure isn't exactly transparent online, so ring ahead or check the website before you go. Allow a good three to four hours if you're planning a full visit, though you could easily do a couple of rides and be off in ninety minutes.
