Aston Road Wood

Walking into Aston Road Wood feels like stepping properly off the beaten track, even though Cheltenham's only a stone's throw away. It's a genuine working woodland rather than some manicured tourist attraction, which means you get the real thing - dense canopy, proper forest floor, and the kind of quiet that actually makes you notice birdsong.

The woods themselves are manageable for a family walk without being boring. Paths wind through beech and oak, and if you time it right in autumn, the colour is genuinely striking. Spring brings bluebells if you're lucky. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - just woodland as it is - which some will find liberating and others will find a bit sparse.

Really suits walkers and anyone who wants a proper woodland experience without the crowds. Kids over seven or so will enjoy it; younger ones might get restless without waymarked trails or play areas. Allow an hour or two depending on how deeply you want to explore. It's free access, naturally.

If you're staying at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, this is a useful afternoon option - close enough to pop to but far enough removed from the tourist bustle of Bourton itself. Equally, Cotswolds Meadow Glamping isn't far and makes a solid base for exploring this part of Gloucestershire. Go midweek if you can; weekends bring dog walkers and it loses some of its peace.
