Aubrey Buxton Nature Reserve

The reserve sits just outside Dunmow and is honestly one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is exactly when you find the best bits. Named after naturalist Aubrey Buxton, it's a proper working landscape where woodland, wetland and grassland all do their thing without much faffing about from the management. You're walking through genuine Essex countryside here, not a manicured park trail, so bring decent boots if there's been rain.

The reserve is gold for birdwatchers and anyone who actually wants to see wildlife rather than just read about it. Otters, water voles, kingfishers - they're all here if you're patient and quiet. The wetland pools are the main draw, and they're genuinely impressive in spring and autumn when migrating birds funnel through. Walkers get a solid couple of hours out of it without feeling rushed, though you can stretch it longer if you're dawdling with binoculars.
