Avon Tyrrell

Outdoor activity centres don't get much more established than this sprawling complex just outside Christchurch. Set across 65 acres of New Forest countryside, Avon Tyrrell has been getting kids (and adults) muddy and exhilarated for decades with everything from climbing walls to kayaking.

Families staying at nearby holiday parks like Hoburne Naish or Meadowbank Holidays often make this a day trip, though honestly the full residential courses are where it really shines. The high ropes course is properly challenging - none of that health-and-safety-gone-mad nonsense here. Meanwhile the indoor climbing wall keeps things going when the weather turns.

What sets it apart is the sheer variety. One minute you're navigating the assault course, the next you're trying archery or tackling the zip wire. The staff know their stuff and actually seem to enjoy being there, which makes all the difference when you're dangling 20 feet up wondering why you thought this was a good idea.

Day visitors are welcome though you'll need to book ahead for most activities. It's not cheap, but then proper outdoor education never is. Worth checking if your holiday park has any deals - some of the Hoburne sites nearby occasionally run packages that include sessions here.
