Poors Common SSSI

Heathland stretches for miles here, broken only by scattered silver birch and the occasional bog pool reflecting the sky. This Site of Special Scientific Interest protects one of the finest examples of lowland heath in southern England, complete with rare birds and reptiles that thrive in this surprisingly wild landscape just minutes from Christchurch town centre.

Birdwatchers will have a field day. Dartford warblers skulk in the gorse, while skylarks rise from the purple heather in summer. I've spotted all six British reptile species here over the years, including smooth snakes and sand lizards that you won't find in many other places. The wildlife alone makes it worth the visit.

Walking here feels properly remote despite the proximity to New Forest holiday parks like Holmsley Campsite and the various Hoburne sites nearby. Families should stick to the main paths - it's easy to get turned around in the maze of tracks, and some areas can be boggy after rain. Dogs are welcome but must stay on leads during bird nesting season.

The site links beautifully with longer walks into the New Forest proper, making it a cracking addition to any holiday based at the nearby campsites. Allow at least two hours if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend a whole afternoon here if the wildlife photography bug bites.
