Ayr Sea Front

The seafront at Ayr stretches for a proper mile or so along the Firth of Clyde, and it's the sort of place that feels like a proper seaside town should feel - a bit faded, a lot lived-in, genuinely local. You've got the promenade itself, where families toddle along with ice creams, and the beach beyond - pebbles rather than sand, which means it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea if you're after a classic bucket-and-spade situation.

The beach itself is the main draw. Low tide reveals more pebbles and some flat rocks; high tide pushes right up and makes for a proper seaside atmosphere. On a decent day the views across to Arran are excellent. The prom has a few amusement arcades, fish and chip shops that actually know what they're doing, and enough benches to watch the water for hours if you're that way inclined.

It's not a destination in itself unless you're a dedicated promenade-walker or serious about the views. But if you're staying at Haven Craig Tara Holiday Park a couple of miles south, it's an easy run into town and worth an afternoon, especially on a calm day. Families with younger kids might find it a bit tired; older children and adults will appreciate the unhurried vibe. The town itself - Ayr proper - has decent shops and restaurants if you want to venture beyond the front. Go on a clear day or don't go at all, honestly.
