Badentarbat Bay

The drive out to Badentarbat Bay rewards patience. You're heading north from Ullapool into proper remote terrain, and the single-track road forces you to slow down and actually notice the landscape - moorland giving way to coastal cliffs with the sort of light that makes photographers weep. The bay itself is a crescent of golden sand backed by low dunes, remarkably untouched considering how accessible it is from the main road. On a clear day the water shifts between turquoise and slate depending on the clouds, and you'll likely have the whole stretch to yourself even in summer.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The coastal path offers genuine exploration rather than a circular loop - you can head south towards the headlands or north along the strand depending on your mood and the tide. An hour is enough for a proper mooch around the bay itself, but if you've got two hours, the wider coastline rewards wandering. Families with young kids will find the beach accessible and the slopes gentle, though there's no infrastructure whatsoever - bring what you need.

Timing matters here. Spring and early summer offer the best light without the midges that can make the Highlands challenging later on. Autumn brings dramatic skies. It's free, obviously, and you can camp nearby at Port a Bhaigh if you want to linger - it's only 2.2 miles south, and the campsite has proper five-star reviews. For a north coast holiday based around Ullapool, this justifies the detour. It's not flashy, but it's exactly what the Scottish coast does best when nobody's watching.
