Glasdes Craig

The walk up to Glasdes Craig isn't long, but it's steep enough to make your calves complain. You're climbing out of Ullapool, heading inland from the loch, and the views back down towards the water just keep getting better as you gain height. The summit isn't dramatic - there's no trig point or dramatic rock formation - but what makes it worthwhile is the panorama across the Minch towards the Isle of Martin and beyond to the Summer Isles. On a clear day you can see properly far.

It's a proper hill walker's spot rather than a casual stroll. Allow an hour up and down if you're fit, longer if you're taking your time. The path itself is pretty rough in places, so decent boots are a good idea rather than trainers. You won't find facilities up there - it's just you and the landscape.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit much for what they get at the end, though teenagers who can handle steep ground will probably enjoy it. This is more for people who actually like walking, who want views rather than a destination in the traditional sense. If you're staying at Port a Bhaigh Campsite nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive to Ullapool and then the climb. Pairs it nicely with a wander round the town itself afterwards - proper harbour charm down there. Free, obviously. Best done in good weather when the visibility gives you something to write home about.
