Bagley Wood

A sprawling woodland on Oxford's doorstep, Bagley Wood is one of those places locals know and visitors often miss. It's proper old-growth forest - the kind with a real sense of depth - covering about 80 hectares between Oxford and the village of Kennington. You won't find theme park attractions or visitor centres here. What you get instead is woodland walks through mixed deciduous trees, open glades, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife if you're quiet enough.

The main appeal is the walk itself. There are several well-worn paths threading through the wood, ranging from easy loops to longer routes that'll take the better part of an afternoon. It's genuinely lovely in late spring when the bluebells are out, though expect it to be muddy after rain - proper wellington job. Families with young kids will get an hour or so out of it before restlessness sets in; serious walkers can happily spend half a day exploring. The wood isn't marketed, so it stays relatively peaceful even on weekends.

It's free to access and open year-round, though there's no formal car park - you'll find roadside parking on the nearby lanes. Located just three to five miles south of Oxford, it works well alongside the city's colleges and museums if you need a break from urban sightseeing. If you're camped at Durham Leys Farm or Valley Farm, this is a genuine alternative to trudging into town. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the short drive if you're after something green and quiet.
