Wittenham Clumps

Twin iron age hill forts rising abruptly from the flat Thames Valley floor - that's Wittenham Clumps, and they're unmissable if you're anywhere near Oxford. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the car park, through woods thick enough that you forget the motorway's just over there. At the top, you get proper 360-degree views across Oxfordshire farmland, with the river bend below and the Chilterns rolling away to the north. On a clear day you can see for miles.

The archaeological interest is genuine - these earthworks date back roughly 2,500 years - but honestly, you're coming for the walk and the viewpoint rather than any information boards or facilities. It's free, naturally, and takes a couple of hours if you're not rushing. The paths are well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so decent shoes matter.

Walkers will rate this highly. Families with primary-school-age kids find it satisfying enough - the climb feels like a proper expedition without being genuinely arduous. If your children are dead keen on ramparts and ancient history, they'll be enthralled; if they're not, they might fidget once they reach the top. There's a car park at Wittenham village, though it's a touch poky.

From Benson Waterfront or Bridge Villa just a few miles away, this makes an ideal half-day break from the campsite. Combine it with a wander through the Thames-side villages nearby and you've got a solid morning sorted.
