Bal-Mawr

The walk up Bal-Mawr rewards you with views across the Golden Valley and beyond - assuming the weather cooperates, which in Herefordshire is never guaranteed. This modest peak sits just west of Hereford and draws walkers rather than casual strollers, though it's nothing that requires serious mountaineering experience. The summit itself is unremarkable - no trig point, no shelter, just open hillside - but that's rather the point. You come for the vistas, not for facilities.

Getting there takes a solid two hours round trip depending on your route and fitness. Most people approach from the lower slopes near the Valley itself, and it's the kind of walk where your legs notice the gradient but your lungs don't rebel. The terrain is typical Herefordshire borderland - grass, the odd rocky section, and plenty of mud if you've been rain. Walkers genuinely enjoy this one; it's too serious for families with young children, but older kids who like a proper hill will find it satisfying.

Stay at Olchon Valley Campsite or Offas Dyke Retreat, both just three to four miles away, and you can make this a half-day excursion before exploring the rest of the area. Spring and autumn are best - summer can be muggy and featureless, while winter turns these slopes into a proper slog. Free to visit, obviously, and no charges for the privilege of earning your views. It's not a headline attraction, but that's exactly why it works.
