Graig Ddu

The walk up Graig Ddu rewards you with one of the best views across the Black Mountains and beyond - assuming the clouds cooperate. This isn't a towering peak by any means, but at around 600 metres, it's high enough to give you real perspective on the Herefordshire landscape. You're looking out towards the border country, with the Wye Valley spreading out below in one direction and the ridgeline stretching off towards Hay-on-Wye in the other.

It's a solid morning walk from Hereford, proper terrain underfoot once you get going - nothing technical, but it demands respect on a windy day. Most people take two to three hours round trip depending on fitness and how often you stop to take photos. The approach is straightforward enough: park near the small communities dotting the foothills and follow the marked paths upwards. Early morning is the sweet spot if you want to beat the weather and catch decent light.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination for young children tired after half an hour, but teenagers keen to climb something real will enjoy it. If you're camping at Offas Dyke Retreat or Olchon Valley Campsite - both within three miles - this is an obvious day out. Even Grove Farm Glamping or Goytree Glamping further afield make it an easy trip.

Free, naturally. No facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat. The Hereford area has decent weather windows in spring and early autumn, though you're gambling a bit with the Welsh weather whatever time you visit.
