Ballyhalbert Moat

The earthwork rising from the fields near Newtownards is what remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, built sometime in the 12th century. What you get is essentially a large grass-covered mound with a flattened top where the wooden keep would have stood, ringed by the ghost of an outer defensive bank. It's the sort of thing that rewards a twenty-minute walk but won't detain you much longer unless you're genuinely into medieval fortifications.

Histor buffs will find it worthwhile for the sheer number of these mottes dotted across Ulster, each one a small marker of Norman ambition in Ireland. The setting is rural and quiet, which has its charm, though there's frankly not much to see beyond the mound itself. Children might manage a clamber up the slope if they're keen on climbing, but the site offers no facilities, no interpretation boards, and no drama. You're essentially standing in a field looking at a very old hill.

It's free to access and takes minimal time, so if you're based at Springvale Holiday Park just down the road or Silverbay Caravan Park slightly further out, it's an easy addition to a morning's drive around the Ards Peninsula. Go if you're collecting mottes or genuinely interested in Norman settlement patterns. Skip it if you're after something with more visual impact or interactive appeal. The real reason to be in this corner of County Down is the coastal walks and Newtownards itself, not this buried piece of medieval history.
