Bank House Moor

Bank House Moor sits on the edge of the Furness Fells, a proper windswept spot that gives you views across to Morecambe Bay without the fanfare. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a moorland plateau - but on a clear day the sight of the bay spreading out below is genuinely worth the walk up from Dalton-in-Furness.

The ascent itself is manageable for most walkers, nothing too steep. You're trudging through open moorland most of the way, which means you get the full force of the weather up here - bring a windproof jacket even when it's calm in town. The heather and grass give way to rocky ground near the summit, and there's a kind of raw, exposed feeling that appeals to people who find the Lake District's honey-pot fells a bit too crowded.

This works best as part of a wider walk through the Furness Fells rather than a destination in itself. Solo walkers and experienced families will get the most from it; young children might find it a bit bleak and exposed. Allow two to three hours if you're making it your main outing for the afternoon.
