Barc Trehafren

The River Severn winds through this nature reserve near Caersws like it's got all the time in the world, and honestly, that's the whole appeal. Barc Trehafren is a proper slice of Mid Wales riverine habitat - the sort of place you come for a walk rather than attractions or facilities. Expect riverside paths, woodland, and genuine quiet. It's the kind of spot where you'll see more bird life than people, which suits the reserve just fine.

Walkers will get the most out of this one. The terrain is manageable but can be muddy depending on recent weather, so decent boots matter. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring what you need and plan accordingly. The reserve works well as a half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Love2Stay, Maesmawr Farm Resort, or Smithy Park are all within a few miles.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are cracking for bird watching; autumn brings colour to the woodland. Winter's quieter but bleakly beautiful if you don't mind the damp. The walk itself doesn't demand hours, though you could easily spend two to three if you're moving slowly and stopping often.

It's not dramatic or Instagram-friendly, and there's bugger all signposting or interpretation. But if you're after an honest nature reserve without the crowds or the gift shop, this delivers. Pair it with other walks in the Caersws area and you've got a solid few days' activity for a Mid Wales caravan holiday.
