Barlaston and Rough Close Common

The Common sits on the edge of Stoke-on-Trent, a stretch of open moorland that feels properly removed from the pottery factories and urban sprawl below. Walkers will find it genuinely useful. There's a decent network of paths threading through, nothing too technical, but enough variation to make it worth more than a quick stroll. You're looking at anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours depending on how lost you want to get, and honestly, getting a bit turned around on open moorland is half the appeal. The ground can be boggy in places after rain - proper waterproofs and decent boots aren't optional.

Historically it's been common land, which means something to people who care about that sort of thing. The terrain itself tells you about the landscape's industrial past - you're standing on land that's refused to be entirely swallowed by the city.

If you're based at Woodview Caravan Site just up the road, this is a natural afternoon out. It's free, obviously, and works well as a counterpoint to a park holiday - get the kids out of the caravan and burning some energy before returning to Greenfields Glamping's facilities. Not somewhere to build a day around on its own, but absolutely worth the short drive from Stoke-on-Trent if you're after moorland walking without the Pennine trek.
