Six towns that merged into one sprawling city, Stoke-on-Trent feels authentically working-class in a way that's increasingly rare. The landscape here shifts from urban terraces to surprisingly wild moorland within a few miles - you're practically on the doorstep of the Peak District.

Butterton Moor and Black Heath offer proper hiking territory, with views that stretch across three counties on a clear day. It's a bit of a trek from the city centre, but well worth it for the sense of space. Peak Wildlife Park makes for a decent family day out, though it's the kind of place that's better on a Tuesday than a weekend.

The postcode puts you in the more rural fringes, where the Staffordshire countryside begins to assert itself. Halifax RT922 provides a slice of local history, though you'd be forgiven for missing it if you're not specifically looking. What strikes you most is how quickly the urban gives way to green - one minute you're passing through former mining villages, the next you're surrounded by fields and dry stone walls.

Getting here means the A50 or A500, with Stoke's railway station connecting you to Manchester and London. The motorway network makes it surprisingly accessible, even if it doesn't feel particularly connected to anywhere else. Staying at one of the nearby parks gives you the best of both worlds - countryside peace with easy access to the Potteries' museums and what remains of the ceramic heritage. Plus you're perfectly placed for day trips into the Peak District proper.
