Barnes's Rough

The woodland around Barnes's Rough feels properly untouched - dense trees, boggy patches underfoot, the kind of place where you'd genuinely need wellies after rain. It's a forest rather than a manicured country estate, which means you get real woodland walking rather than a genteel stroll.

What you're actually doing here is picking your way through native woodland on whatever paths have been established by regular walkers. There are stretches of open forest floor, patches of dense undergrowth, and bits that feel genuinely remote despite being only a few miles from Worcester. Bring a map or know your route - signposting isn't exactly comprehensive.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination for a quick twenty-minute leg-stretch, but rather a solid couple of hours if you want to properly explore. Families with young kids might find the muddy terrain and lack of facilities a bit much, though older children who enjoy getting properly outdoors will be fine. History types won't find much - this is about the forest itself, not what happened in it.

The nearest proper amenities are in Worcester, so plan accordingly. If you're staying at Bredon View Holiday Park Estate & Golf Course nearby, this makes a solid half-day outing to break up a park-based holiday. Free access, obviously. Go when it's been dry-ish, or expect boots caked in mud. It's not Instagram-friendly, but it's genuine woodland, and that's the whole appeal.
