Barnwell village

Barnwell sits quietly on the edge of Northamptonshire, just a short drive south of Peterborough, and it's one of those places that rewards you for bothering to leave the main road. What strikes you first is the church - All Saints - which dominates the village with its solid medieval presence. You can wander through on foot without fuss, taking in the stone cottages and the sense that very little has changed here in centuries.

The real draw is the castle ruins. They're nothing grand or dramatic, but they're substantial enough to conjure up something of the medieval settlement that thrived here. The earthworks and scattered stonework tell their own story if you're into that sort of thing. Families with younger kids might find an hour here enough; it's not a massive site and there's not much interpretation, so you need to bring your own imagination. Walkers and history types will linger longer, poking about the grounds and trying to piece together what once stood where.

Barnwell works well as a gentle stop if you're camping at Castle Farm Campsite nearby - it's only five miles away, so easily managed as a morning or afternoon outing without any complicated travel. Free to explore, no entrance fees, no crowds, and it's the kind of place where you'll likely have the ruins mostly to yourself. Go midweek if you can. The village itself is small enough that you won't need more than a couple of hours, but that's rather the point - it's unpretentious and genuinely quiet.
