Barriers Wood

The woodland at Barriers Wood, just outside Maidstone, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is precisely why it works so well. Ancient oak and beech trees create a proper canopy overhead, filtering the light into that particular shade of green you only get in old-growth forest. The paths are well-maintained enough for families without feeling over-engineered, and there's a real sense of being away from it all even though you're minutes from town.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic terrain, but the woodland itself rewards attention - the undergrowth changes with the seasons, and if you're quiet you'll see fallow deer. Budget two hours if you're taking your time; an hour if you just want to stretch your legs. No facilities that I could find, so take what you need.

It slots perfectly into a broader park-based holiday around Maidstone. Chegworth Mill Glamping is only 4 miles away if you want something a bit more upmarket than traditional camping, while Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is equally close for those with caravans. The wood itself won't occupy a full day, but it's exactly the kind of morning activity that breaks up a week at one of these parks - somewhere to burn off energy before lunch rather than a destination in itself. Kids will enjoy it for an hour or so; adults rather longer.
