Barrow Hill

The walk up Barrow Hill, just outside Stockbridge, rewards you with one of those views that makes you forget why you bothered checking your phone for the past hour. It's not a dramatic climb - more of a steady amble through proper Hampshire countryside - but the 360-degree sweep from the top is genuinely worth the effort.

What you're actually looking at is a Bronze Age burial mound, though honestly, most people come for the vistas rather than the archaeology. The hill itself isn't massive, but it rises enough to give you sight lines across the Test Valley and beyond. Clear day and you can pick out landmarks for miles. The walk itself takes about 45 minutes return if you're not dawdling, though you'll want to linger at the summit.

It suits walkers who enjoy a proper country ramble without the scrambling. Families with kids aged eight upwards will manage fine - the gradient's manageable and there's something satisfying about claiming a peak, even a modest one. History enthusiasts might appreciate the burial mound context, though there's not much interpretation on site.

Free to visit, no formal hours that I'm aware of. Best tackled in morning light if photography matters to you. The Test Valley around here is cracking walking country, and Stockbridge itself has decent shops and pubs for post-walk recovery. If you're basing yourself at Cedar Valley or Stockbridge View, Barrow Hill makes for a proper half-day out without needing a car journey.
