Chilbolton Down

Chilbolton Down sits just outside Stockbridge, a proper chalk downland walk that rewards you with wide views across the Test Valley. There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no facilities - just open grassland, a few scattered trees, and the kind of horizon that stretches for miles on a clear day.

It's a straightforward ramble rather than a serious climb. Most walkers will want to allow an hour or so to reach the top and poke around, longer if you're the type to sit and soak it in. The slopes are gentle enough that families with capable legs can manage it without drama, though toddlers might find it dull after twenty minutes. Serious hikers will appreciate the network of paths crisscrossing the down and the chance to link it with nearby walks along the Test Valley.

Walking from Stockbridge village itself is manageable, though the access from the lower slopes takes patience. Spring and early summer are lovely - the chalk grassland comes alive with wildflowers and the light is brilliant. Autumn works too if you don't mind a bit of mud.
