Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre

The place runs as a working railway centre, so you'll find restored locomotives and rolling stock dotted about the site, and if you time it right, you might catch them being worked on or even moved around.

Railway enthusiasts will find plenty to sink their teeth into here - the collection includes some proper significant machines, and the volunteers know their stuff. For families, it's less about white-knuckle thrills and more about pottering around, peering into cabs, and understanding how Victorians managed industrial logistics. Kids under eight might lose interest after an hour, if I'm honest. Bring them when they've got some grasp of how trains actually work.

Chesterfield is just down the road, which makes this a decent half-day stop if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Rother Valley Country Park or Riverside Valley Camping. It's free to look around the exterior, though opening hours and admission fees for the interior are worth checking before you visit.
