Barrows Wood

The woodland paths at Barrows Wood offer proper respite from Maidstone's suburban sprawl. This isn't some manicured country estate - it's genuine forest, the sort of place where you can actually lose the sense of being near a town. The walking here is straightforward enough, ranging from easy loops through the lower sections to more challenging terrain higher up, with the trees providing decent cover even on drizzly Kent days.

Walkers will find it most rewarding, particularly those after a brisk hour or two without needing to drive far. The forest floor is soft underfoot, and depending on season you'll spot bluebells in spring or fungal surprises in autumn. Families with younger kids might manage a shorter circuit comfortably, though it's not a place with facilities, so come prepared. There's no admission charge that we're aware of, making it a solid freebie on a park holiday.

Stay at Chegworth Mill Glamping just 3.3 miles away and you've got an excellent morning or afternoon sorted. Even from Oak View Holiday Park at five miles out, it's worth the short drive. The wood doesn't demand hours - ninety minutes covers most of what's worth seeing - but it fills a gap nicely between beach days or visits to larger attractions. The canopy work here is genuinely atmospheric without being Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.
