Basett's Ridge

Wild Atlantic swells crash against jagged rocks below this dramatic clifftop stretch near Ilfracombe, creating one of Devon's more spectacular coastal walks. Basett's Ridge offers proper rugged coastline - the sort where you need to watch your footing and keep children well back from the edge.

The beach itself sits tucked beneath towering cliffs, accessible only by a steep scramble that's definitely not for the faint-hearted. Once down there, you'll find a rocky shoreline that's brilliant for exploring rock pools at low tide, though the waves can be fierce when the weather turns. Surfers sometimes brave the conditions, but it's not a gentle family paddling spot by any stretch.

Walkers get the best deal here. The South West Coast Path runs along the ridge, delivering cracking views across to Lundy Island on clear days. Allow a good two hours if you're tackling the full section, and pack waterproofs - the weather changes fast along this exposed stretch.
