The Basilica sits quietly in Walsingham, a few miles east of Fakenham, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard with its sheer devotion. This isn't some grand medieval cathedral - it's a 20th-century Catholic shrine built on the site where medieval pilgrims once flocked to venerate a statue of the Virgin Mary. The modern basilica is all soaring ceilings and light streaming through stained glass, a proper contrast to the ancient wells and chapels dotted around the village itself.

Walking through, you get a real sense of pilgrimage culture. Candles flicker in front of side altars, visitors move quietly through the aisles, and there's genuine spiritual weight to the place rather than tourist theatre. The shrine gardens are peaceful - exactly what you need after driving through Norfolk's flat, windswept landscape.
