Basset's Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist trap. Basset's Copse near Cranleigh is the kind of forest you stumble into mid-way through a Sussex ramble and think, right, this'll do nicely for an hour. Dense deciduous trees, decent path network, and the sort of quiet you don't find near the car park at more famous spots.

The woodland sits in that gentle rolling country between Cranleigh and the wider Sussex Weald. You're not walking into some dramatic gorge or ancient monument - this is proper English forest, the kind where the light filters through beech and oak and the undergrowth smells like earth and dead leaves in equal measure. In spring the bluebells work themselves into a state. Autumn turns the whole place into that satisfying muddy brown-gold you go out for in October.

It's less of a destination, more of an excuse to get off your feet if you're based at Slinfold Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road. The walk is undemanding, which suits families with younger kids - no scrambling, no climbing, just forest. An hour is plenty, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who stops to identify mosses.

No facilities that I could establish, no admission charge as far as I can tell - it's just there. Worth the detour if you're in the area and need air that doesn't smell like the motorway. Not the sort of place that'll rewrite your weekend, but honestly? Sometimes a quiet wood is exactly what you need.
