Bassingthorpe Spring

The spring itself is tucked into woodland just outside Rotherham, and it's one of those places that rewards a bit of wandering. You won't find manicured paths or visitor centres here - it's genuinely wild forest, the sort where tree roots cross the track and the canopy gets properly thick. The water emerges clear and cold from the ground, creating a small pool that locals have known about for years but rarely gets crowded.

It's brilliant for walkers who want something quieter than the honeypot spots, and families with older kids will enjoy picking their way through the trees and spotting the spring itself. Younger children might find it a bit underwhelming if they're expecting something more obviously dramatic - it's a spring, not a waterfall. Allow an hour for a proper potter about, though you could do it in thirty minutes if you're just after a quick look.
