Boston Castle

You'll find this Victorian folly perched on a hill just outside Rotherham, commanding views across South Yorkshire that make the climb worthwhile. Boston Castle isn't actually a castle at all - it's a 19th-century tower built by a local businessman, and the museum inside tells the story of the area's industrial heritage and the characters who shaped it.

The climb up takes about ten minutes, nothing strenuous, and the views from the top are genuinely good on a clear day. The museum itself is fairly compact - you can do it properly in 45 minutes to an hour - but there's enough here to engage anyone interested in local history. Kids will find the tower itself more interesting than the exhibits, if we're being honest.

It's free entry, which helps, though opening hours can be a bit sporadic depending on volunteers, so worth checking before you head over. Weekends tend to be more reliable. The site works well as part of a broader wander around Rotherham, and it's close enough to several proper parks that you could easily base yourself at Hooton Lodge Farm or Waleswood Caravan & Camping Park and combine this with proper outdoor time at Rother Valley Country Park nearby.

Won't take up much of your holiday, but on a decent afternoon when you fancy a walk with a bit of local colour, it's worth the visit.
