Battle of Dunbar Memorial

The windswept clifftop just outside Dunbar marks one of Scotland's most decisive military moments - September 1650, when Cromwell's forces routed the Scottish royalists in a matter of hours. You won't find much in the way of formal infrastructure here; it's more of a pilgrimage spot than a manicured visitor attraction. The memorial itself is modest, but standing on those high cliffs with the North Sea churning below does something to your sense of scale - you can almost feel the chaos of that September day.

History types will want to make the trip. Walkers absolutely should, because the clifftop path itself is proper stunning, with the Firth of Forth spread out eastward and Dunbar's old harbour nestled below. The walk takes about an hour on decent paths, and you get sweeping views across the water to Bass Rock. Families with older kids might enjoy it; younger ones could find it a bit sparse once they've had a look at the stone marker.

There's no admission charge - you just show up. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see something; misty conditions rob the place of its drama. If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the coast, it's barely twenty minutes away and worth fitting in between beach time and exploring Dunbar proper. Pair it with a walk along the coast path for a proper afternoon.
