Bawdsey Beach

The shingle beach at Bawdsey curves away toward Felixstowe, and on a clear day you can see right across the estuary. It's a proper working coastline - cargo ships slide past, the light changes constantly, and there's a real sense of being on the edge of something. The beach itself is typical Suffolk pebbles, the kind that crunch underfoot and work their way into your shoes.

What draws people here is the Red Tower - a 1540s gun fort that sits squat and weathered on the beach itself, a leftover from when Henry VIII actually cared about defending his eastern coast. You can't get inside it, but standing in front of the thing while the sea laps at its base hits differently than reading about it. The Bawdsey radar station, just inland, was where they figured out how to spot aircraft coming in during the war, which adds another layer to why this patch of coast matters.

Walkers will find the path stretches nicely in both directions, though it's not dramatic - more meditative than spectacular. Families with young kids might tire after an hour unless they're into fossil hunting or the maritime history angle. The light's best in late afternoon, and the beach is rarely rammed, which counts for something.

If you're staying at any of the parks around Felixstowe or Woodbridge - Suffolk Sands, Peewit Caravans, or Run Cottage are all within four miles - Bawdsey makes a solid afternoon leg-stretch rather than a full destination in itself. Combine it with the river walks at Woodbridge or a chip supper in Felixstowe, and you've got a proper Suffolk day.
