The Skirts

The Skirts is a proper woodland walk just outside Woodbridge, and it's one of those places that rewards you for actually bothering to leave the main tourist trail. It's nothing flashy - just forest, really - but that's rather the point. You get a decent stretch of walking through Suffolk woodland, the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of screaming children.

The forest itself is manageable without being a trudge. Most people spend an hour to ninety minutes here, which is enough to clear your head without requiring military-grade navigation skills. The paths are fairly straightforward, though they can be muddy depending on the season - spring and early summer are your best bets if you want to avoid squelching through ankle-deep water.

Historically minded types might find it interesting as old Suffolk woodland, though don't expect plaques and interpretive signs. This is a place for walkers and nature spotters rather than families after a packed itinerary. The nearest caravan sites - Run Cottage Touring Park and Steadings Park - are both within three miles, making it a decent afternoon activity if you're based at one of the Woodbridge holiday parks.

Admission appears to be free, which is brilliant. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared with water and sensible footwear. It's not Instagram-famous, which means it won't be rammed, and honestly that's what makes it worth the detour from the bigger attractions.
