Bayham Old Abbey

The ruins of Bayham Old Abbey sit in a proper atmospheric valley just outside Wadhurst, and the first thing that hits you is the sheer scale of what's left standing. This 13th-century Premonstratensian monastery fell into decay centuries ago, but enough of the sandstone walls remain to give you a genuine sense of the place - the nave, the chancel, fragments of the cloister. You can walk around freely among the tumbled stones and overgrown arches, which is far more rewarding than being herded through a manicured tourist site.

History types will spend a solid hour picking through the architectural details and imagining the monastic life that unfolded here for roughly 400 years before the Dissolution. The setting itself - wooded, secluded, with the River Teise nearby - does half the work for you. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes unless they're keen on clambering over rubble. Walkers should definitely make the trip; the abbey works well as a focal point on a longer ramble through the High Weald countryside.

The nearest proper base would be Hopgarden Glamping, just 1.5 miles away, which makes Bayham an easy morning excursion before heading to other parks in the area.
