Bayonet Brewing

The industrial shed just outside Northallerton turns out to be exactly where you want to spend an afternoon if you're parked nearby. Bayonet Brewing is a proper working brewery - you're not getting craft beer theatre here, just actual beer being made in front of you, and a tasting room where you can try what they've got on.

It's refreshingly unpretentious. Walk in and you're surrounded by tanks and equipment; the kind of place where the brewers actually want you there. The beers are worth trying - they know what they're doing - and the atmosphere beats any overstyled taproom you'll find closer to town. Staff know their stuff without being annoying about it.

Give yourself a couple of hours if you're making it a proper visit. Families won't find much to hold the kids' attention for long, but if you're a keen drinker or just appreciate the actual process of making beer, this is well worth the short drive from Northallerton. Solo travellers and couples get the most out of it.

It fits neatly into a caravan holiday at Cote Ghyll or Pembroke - both within easy reach - as a break from the usual park amenities. Check their website before you go, as opening hours aren't fixed. Admission's free to look around, though you'll want to buy a drink or two to make it worth their while. No food, so arrive after lunch or head into town for a bite.
