Beacon Point Bay

The coastal path around Peterlee brings you to Beacon Point Bay, a working stretch of Durham coastline that feels properly lived-in rather than prettified for visitors. Even Castledene, a few miles further south, puts you within easy reach of the bay for a morning walk. The whole stretch between Peterlee and Hartlepool works well for people who want coastal scenery without the crowds - Crimdon Dene's reputation speaks for itself, so stick with The Barn if you want a proper base.

Go in spring or autumn when the light's best and you won't be dodging school groups. Two hours is enough to walk out, have a proper look, and walk back.
