Easington Colliery Local Nature Reserve

A former colliery turned nature reserve - that's the sort of thing you either find brilliant or deeply sad, depending on your outlook. Easington Colliery Local Nature Reserve, just outside Peterlee, is proof that industrial land can genuinely come back to life.

The reserve sprawls across what was once a working mine, and you get that slightly surreal feeling walking through woodland where pit wheels used to turn. There's proper birdwatching here - lapwings, curlews, various warblers depending on season. The wetland areas attract migrating species too. It's not flashy, but it's the real deal if you're serious about spotting things with binoculars.

Walkers will find decent trails threading through grassland and scrub, though it's fairly flat and open - don't expect moody forest paths. Kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into nature spotting. History types, however, will appreciate the backstory: this was mining country, and the land's recovery tells you something about ecological resilience.

Free to access, and worth a morning visit if you're based at The Barn at Easington or Castledene Holiday Park nearby. Go early for the best birdwatching. Spring and autumn migrations are peak times. The reserve works well as a quieter counterpoint to a broader County Durham coast holiday - close enough to Peterlee for grabbing lunch, but far enough removed that you'll feel like you've properly escaped.
